Lansing -- Texting at the wheel is banned starting Thursday, but drivers are getting mixed messages about enforcement.
While highway billboards and TV commercials alert motorists to the new law, police and state officials are worried about how difficult it will be to crack down on those typing or reading on their cell phones.

Bernero, Dillon gubernatorial debate heated

Grand Rapids -- Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and House Speaker Andy Dillon hammered each other on their job-creation records, stem cell research and leadership abilities in a heated debate between the two Democratic candidates for governor Monday night.
In the campaign's first televised showdown, Bernero called Dillon a "fat cat," "corporate raider" and "speaker of the mess" who oversaw wage and benefit cuts and layoffs as a private businessman and budget breakdowns as a legislative leader. Dillon responded that unemployment in Lansing has ballooned under Bernero's administration and he said a Lansing group dubbed his foe "least effective legislator" when Bernero was in the state Senate.
